  • Best gift ideas for grade school kids and teenagers

EVERYONE WANTS to give kids a gift that they will use and enjoy. Here is a list of  gift ideas that will impress and please kids.

     All Kids

    • Ipod touch. The latest Ipod is what they want. As of this writing, the Ipod Touch has both a camera AND speaker so kids don’t have to wear headphones to hear downloads. Ironically, this item comes with ear bud headphones.
    •  Cell phone. Kids under age 15 don’t need a smart phone with internet access (after all, they usually know where they are going because they are being driven by an adult.) Buy kids under age 14 or 15 a phone that slides or flips open and comes in a cool color. Add them to your unlimited texting phone plan for about $10/month. Most older kids want a smart phone (which uses internet access) or a cheap phone that is very basic.
    • Shoes. Girls like UGG brand Boots and boys like Converse, Vans, or Reebok Zig running shoes.     ZIG RUNNING SHOES by Reebok

    • Chemistry sets are great for budding scientists.
    • Drum sets to play with a Wii system from Nintendo are a sure hit for young musicians.
    • Electric scooters, such as those by Razor, are fun and don’t drive terribly fast. Find them for  under $150 at Target stores.
    • LESSONS!!!! Offer to pay for lessons for a kid to learn karate, piano, oil painting, pottery, fencing, or a multitude of other interests.
    • CAMP. Offer to pay for  your favorite kid to attend a camp…either in the local area  or some where far away… sports camps (such as hockey or football), astronaut camp, horseback riding camp or a religious camp with tons of planned fun. The camp can be any time of year – - one they may enjoy the memory of and re-visit for many years.
    Kids age 13 & up
    • Gift certificates to a retail store.
    • Round of golf, cart included.
    • Concert tickets to a favorite performer.
    • Cologne, such as “California” by Hollister for guys, or scented body spray for girls.
    • Juicy Couture® bracelets for girls – go to a Neiman Marcus Outlet Mall for best prices or log into Neiman’s online. You can’t go wrong with a Neiman Marcus purchase!

  • Best ideas for hostess gifts

A hostess gift is a little something that guests bring along when they are invited to an event at someone’s house.

Regarded as a sign of thanks for being invited – in addition to helping the host out with extra provisions – it would be downright rude to not bring a hostess gift to a party, regardless of whether it is a giant party with hundreds of people, or an intimate gathering of friends.

Present your token of gratitude for being invited – and respect for their hard work – by immediately greeting the host or hostess upon arrival. You may wish to say, “Thank you for having me over — here is a little something that I brought.”

The following make excellent hostess gifts:

    1. A good bottle of wine -

      a.  See our suggestions for excellent, reasonably priced white wine and;

      b. Also consider these red wines that appeal to everyone, such as Tempranillo red wine from Chile, one of our favorites.

    2. Scented candles – (Yankee® candles are highly scented and are now available in soy-based versions)

    3. Bouquet of fresh flowers – You cannot go wrong with flowers… ever.

    4. Appetizers – that suit the occasion, such as Nine-layer bean dip for casual affairs or Jarlsberg cheese with water crackers for fancier occasions.

  • Gift Etiquette: Gift receipts, thank you notes and delivery confirmation

Gift etiquette, or the lack thereof, can lead to all sorts of  family drama, social problems, gossip and dismay among those giving OR receiving presents. Make mom proud and manage your gift etiquette.

    GIFT RECEIPTS

Gift etiquette has recently come to include gift receipts. What are gift receipts? Let’s say that you purchase a gift for someone and are unsure if it is their size, or if they will find it useful. Simply ask the cashier, upon checking out, if they can print a gift receipt for you. A gift receipt is similar to a duplicate receipt, but it does not show the price of the item purchased.

We thoroughly approve of giving and receiving gift receipts with presents.

Gift receipts make returning or exchanging merchandise easier for the recipient — and alleviates potentially embarrassing situations whereupon the gift recipient has to ask for gift receipts in order to return a present.

    DELIVERY CONFIRMATION

It is never appropriate to inquire of the person to whom you gave the gift if they “returned” the gift and selected another item.  Yet, what if you are dying to find out if they received it and whether or not they liked the gift?

Some gift specialists say that prudent people should wait to get a thank you note in the mail, or some other sort of communication, to see what the recipient’s comments are regarding a gift.  However, if curiosity is getting the best of you, or the item you sent is very costly, you may wish to ask “Did you like the item I sent you?”

If you want to be sure that your gift was received, on the other hand, simply deliver said gift in person or have it mailed using a confirmation delivery service such as those offered by the United States Postal Service, UPS, and Federal Express. You will then know if your gift was received — even if you never hear back from the socially inept beneficiary.

    THANK YOU NOTES

We don’t care if the entire planet has gone high-tech; it is not appropriate to send a thank you note via email or text to someone. Did they send your gift via text or email? We did not think so.

Buy a box of thank you note cards to keep on hand and send off a thank you note as soon as you receive a gift – - or you may not be receiving ANY gifts from the offended person in the future!

  • Best Gifts For Kids: Make The Little Darlings Happy

Make the little darlings happy by giving a present to children from our list of the best gifts for kids.

Shrug off the feeling that you are expected to give a lavish or expensive gift to a child when attending a birthday party or mailing a present to a kid. It simple is not necessary.

Spend what you can afford and do not put yourself in the position of becoming a pauper merely to impress the parents or child.

The sad truth is that we have been to birthday parties where children never even realized from whom the gift they were opening came from.

(And don’t get us started on thank you notes. In over twelve years of attending kids’ birthday parties and shipping presents to relatives, we can honestly tell you that we have received 3 thank you notes. Not kidding.)

Like everyone else, kids love gifts that they will actually use. With our finger on the pulse of kids today, we suggest the following as excellent options for the best gifts for kids:

    •    Two bottles of nail polish and one tube of lip gloss in a small make-up bag for girls.
    • A baton for girls and a boomerang for boys or girls.
    • Pretend shave kit for little boys. These can be purchased in the shampoo aisle at some stores, including Target.
    • Sticker books – little kids especially love stickers.
    •    i-Tune gift cards for older kids who have an I-pod or I-phone.
    • $10 gift cards to Target for any age child.
    • $10 gift cards to Chik-Fil-A, McDonald’s or some such fast food fare.
    • Do-it-yourself snow globe kit with the birthday kid’s picture inside (see craft stores and some Wal-Mart stores).
    • Friendship bracelets or a kit for making them.
    • Pot-holder loom kits are nostalgic fun for boys and girls.
